These Are The Things...

These are the things that make me sad:

The abuse of a child, it's innocence shorn,
A broken marriage irreconcilably torn.
Family dysfunction, a societal thorn,
A public malfunction, a break from the norm.
Hunger, starvation in any form,
The face of frustration, lost, forlorn.
Mass destruction from a devastating storm.
An animal's pain, so helplessly worn,
Man's disregard for land where he's born.
Wasteful consumption with no burden borne.
The fall and demise from social scorn,
The anguish of death we all learn to mourn.

These are the things that make me glad:

Beating the odds when the chips are down,
A miraculous win in a sports crazed town.
The beauty of nature, it's wonders abound,
Seeing the world, each experience profound.
A baby's smile and first steps around,
An animal's birth, no words can be found,
A cool summer rain; shaped cumulus clouds,
A fresh snowy day, earth's blanketed shroud.
Recognition of feats that make men proud,
Evil's defeat, dispensed without sound.
The preservation of hallowed ground,
The grace of God and his merciful crown.

These are the things that I find are bad:

Blatant cruelty, acts wantonly unfair,
Flagrant destruction that others don't dare.
Malicious hate, wars wrought with despair,
Selfish debates by those who won't share.
Arrogant leaders who act unaware,
Those that can't wait to get anywhere.
Bold disrespect for who got you there,
Cold neglect for burdens some bear.
Those that deceive to get everywhere,
Who deny and conceal their criminal affairs.
The brandishing of guns with extreme lack of care,
The embellishment of funds for personal flair.

These are the things that I wish I had:

The ability to create total Peace on Earth,
Honor good men and all that they're worth.
The moral conviction to prod the inert,
The pastoral connection for a spiritual rebirth.
A billion dollars to fight famine and thirst,
The power to heal, provide shoes, clothes and work.
Infinite wisdom with the power to avert,
Natural disasters that wreak havoc and hurt.
A way to comfort all those that feel cursed.
A place to rest when things seem their worst.
The means to prosper, entertain and traverse,
The power to conquer the ails of the universe.

Impenetrable Calm

An oppressively hot day, sadistically long,
Accentuated by an impenetrable calm.
Temperature's rising, humidity's thick,
It compromises a thermometer stick.
Air pressure's soaring, no real relief,
Sweat keeps pouring beyond belief.
Cumulus clouds gather up high,
Thunderheads start to multiply
A black horizon far from norm,
Ushers an approaching storm.
Wind, hail and sheets of rain,
The exhale of a coming train.
A cylindrical cloud appears,
Cone-shaped gyro-sphere,
It drops down from above,
Sucks up all that we love.
Lives swept side to side,
In its vortex none survive.
A burst of sudden chaos.
The worst all that's lost.
Immeasurable, intense,
Lifetime consequence.
In an instant its done,
Lifetime gone in one.
Survivors rise to see.
A leftover tragedy.
Here one minute,
Gone the next.
Never sure
What to
Expect
In the
End.

The Solitude of Bronze

Sentimental moments,
Suspended still in time.
Solidified atonements,
Frozen, rain or shine.
Standing straight forever,
Seated sovereign-ly.
Hands held together,
In immortality.
Etched in perpetuity,
Solid chiseled stone.
Marbleised congruity,
Stoically alone.
Visages born of man,
Embraced exquisitedly,
Petrified grains of sand,
Encased eternally,
Defiantly reclusive,
Silent in response.
Heroically induced in,
The solitude of bronze.

Coastermania

Daredevils of the modern world.
Braving speeds that will blow your mind,
Thrill seeking men, women, boys and girls.
Craving needs of the G-Force kind.

Millions of cases of addicted hysteria,
Bands of brothers in a wild industry,
Flying through spaces in restricted areas.
Expanding each others child fantasy.

Lines upon lines that reek anticipation.
Waiting on ends for more than an hour.
Signs of the times that reach 'cross a nation,
Invigorating friends to explore the power.

Strapped inside a fiberglass space,
Anxiously awaiting that moment when.
Relaxed and sure locked bars are in place.
As the cars lurch forward, the ride begins.

Streaking from zero to 60 in seconds.
Climbing mountains into wood and steal skies,
Breaking 100 with screaming shrill beckons.
Free falling down with tear filled eyes.

Twisting and turning through loops and bends,
Flying both sideways and upside down,
Resisting yet yearning the ride never end.
Relying on science to avoid the ground.

Reaching speeds beyond belief,
Soaring weightless, hands up then in,
Adrenalin feeds of fond relief.
Coming to rest, then begin again.

Children of the new millennium,
Ignoring death and gravity,
An unnatural phenomenon,
Performing feats of insanity.

One day the world will look back and see,
The youth of today's unbridled passion.
How daring and crazy so many can be,
Their true coastermania idolization.

Who Do You Think You Are?

You call yourself a millionaire?
Ask us if we really care.
Who the hell do you think you are?
Someone special, a superstar?

You think the world revolves for you.
Let me tell you, that just ain't true.
Maybe one day you'll finally learn,
With humble sweat you'll earn your turn.

You may be rich but you're no king.
Money can't buy you everything.
Wealth is not a monetary state.
Dollars don't matter at the pearly gate.

Politicians, CEOs
Actors, Musicians, Athletic Pros.
Just sit back and count your dough,
Don't give back, to hell you'll go.

So much greed and opulence,
Fools that feed on indulgence.
Hippocrates bleed their arrogance.
Reap their seeds from innocence.

The world's in need of reverence,
A formal creed of selflessness.
Men should heed their lack of sense.
Humility breeds a consciousness.

One of these days it might sink in.
The life you live to God's a sin.
Edacity's become a social scar.
Just who the hell do you think you are?

In Honor of Frost

In Honor of Robert Frost...

I, too, am a dedicated fan, of a man I know too well,

I often sway and turn his way, to ease a mental block,

He inspires me, quite subtly, to step outside my shell,

He reveals to me, the world I see, thoughts I poetically tell,

His mind you see, breeds sanity, to kindred-spirited stock.

Annapolis City Dock

This piece was written to describe the accompanying painting by a favorite local artist of mine by the name of Paul McGehee. Check out his work. It is amazing...

A city nestled on Maryland's shore,
Nomadic vessels docked door to door,
Naval home to officers and plebes,
Adorned in long pants and white short sleeves.
Pensively quiet cove of cobbled streets,
Originally preserved for touristy feet.
Lined quaintly with shops, restaurants and bars,
Inscribed faintly with time tarnished battle scars,
Steeple-topped domes that reach to the stars.

Alex Haley sculptured with book and raised hand,
Telling prostrate children where his roots began.

Textured calm of dusk's fading light,
Withered balm of a warm summer night,
Incandescent shadows blend pastoral blues,
Latent streaked clouds white wash vestal hues,
Illuminant lusters of candlelit shops,
Gothic tree clusters peak chimney rooftops,
Half hear a buglar's faint call to arms,
Twinkling lights radiant iridescent charm.

Childlike Daydreams

Distant clouds across the horizon,
Subtle hints of approaching storms,
Silhouettes of snow-capped mountains,
Protect the edge of Evermore.

Clear blue skies are soon disrupted,
By cumulus clouds in shapes and forms,
Ice cream cones and foam filled fountains,
Collect and hedge rough ocean shores.

Marshmallow pillows, cottony white,
Soft armadillos and polar bear kites,
Unicorns, dragons and Medieval knights.
A kaleidoscope of hypnotic delights.

A soft gentle breeze escorts stronger winds,
Fluxing rough seas and shuffling shark fins.
Grey tinged clusters of powder puffs begin,
To gather and usher the darkness in.

The rumble of thunder can faintly be heard,
As elephants and stallions assemble their herds.
Flashes of lightening are distantly seen,
Slashing and brightening what once was serene.

In front of the mountains sheer curtains fall,
Slanting brushstrokes in a midsummer's squall.
As the Gods bowl strikes down heavenly lanes,
The sky soon erupts in showers of rain.

I sit and I ponder God's beautiful scene,
Its elegant wonder, its passionate scheme,
Suddenly I'm consciously sober it seems,
No longer lost in my childlike daydreams.

Let's Fall In Love Again

I cherish my life,
It's not perfect you see,
I've got more than most,
Its been good enough for me.

Sure I've had my shares,
Of mistakes and regrets,
There are things out there,
That I'd rather forget.

But when you get right down to it,
Reflect and ponder through it,
I think that most folks would agree,

The life that I've had,
Is not all that bad,
It's the epitome of what most men dream.

If I could live through it again,
Go back and redo it again,
If given a chance for reprieve.

I'd do it the same again,
Play my life's game again,
With contentment and sheer modesty,

I'd relive all moments,
With sober atonement,
Retrace every life step I see.

I'd walk the same path,
Without questions asked,
Take the road that brought my wife to me.

Let's fall in love again,
Live through it all again.
Go back to the beginning and see.
All of the moments that brought us together,
Those moments with just you and me.

Let's rebuild our love again,
Stronger than it's ever been,
A fortress forged solid and lovingly.

Let's conceive again,
Replant life's seeds again,
Stand by conjoined faithfully.

Let's fall in love again,
Watch our kids crawl again,
Not try to change that meant to be.

Lets reflect and recall again,
Our Family's big and small again,
Hold hands through pained sorrow soberly.

We'll treasure it all again,
Friends' visits and calls again,
Recreate memories of how a good life should be.

Let's wade through it all again,
Stand firm and, not fall again,
Embrace our predestiny.

Let's live Springs and Falls again,
Watch kids grow tall again,
Become the proud reflections we see.

Let's toast to it all again,
Bow to fate's call again,
Follow God's will and our dreams.

Let's fall in love again,
Live through it all again.
Let's re-fall in love, you and me.
