More Dog Letters To God...
Dear God,
I'm a lucky dog, with a comfortable home,
Fed regularly, bathed, brushed and combed.
I go for long walks, get occasional bones.
I have a fenced yard but can never roam.
Why is that?
Dear Dog,
You are very fortunate, my canine friend,
But the world's faster than you may know,
Too many dogs reach untimely ends,
With humans constantly on the go,
Dear God,
Sometimes my master forgets my water,
My throat gets parched and dry.
So I'll drink from the toilet, does that really matter?
It bothers him and I can't figure why.
Can you clarify?
Dear Dog,
Yes, people get busy and are prone to forget,
The necessities which pets need the most.
Don't worry too much and drink from the toilet,
Just avoid it if yellow or if somethings afloat.
Dear God,
Sometimes my butt itches so I try to scratch it,
But I can't reach, as hard as I try.
So I sit on the carpet and scootch forward a bit,
My master goes ballistic. Why?
Dear Dog,
Well friend you see, carpets are expensive,
I realize they're more abrasive than grass.
I suggest the next time you get apprehensive,
Find somewhere more private to scratch your ass.
Dear God,
My best friend Jafar got hit by a car,
We were just playing and he chased a cat.
His master took him to a place that is far,
I never saw him again, where's he at?
Dear Dog,
Jafar is okay, he's here with me, just as other dogs are.
People spend money and go to extremes,
When the injured and ill are as they are.
Pets are more expendable it seems.
Dear God,
When people eat they sit at a table,
In chairs with their feet on the floor.
I get my food served on the floor, when they're able,
It's hard to listen when your eating on all fours.
Any suggestions?
Dear Dog,
People are funny, they spend lots of money,
They never like it thought that they're poor.
Their talk may be dull and what would the fun be,
If you never ate scraps off the floor.
Dear God,
And what's the deal with hot food on plates?
I always get my food served cold.
I must admit though, sometimes I can't wait,
Is it quicker to get served in a bowl?
Dear Dog,
No, not really, it's a matter of taste,
It depends on your owner and the time it takes,
People get caught up in their hurried haste,
It's not so bad though when you get to lick plates.
Dear God,
I've heard it said dog's look like their masters,
I've never known that to be true.
Is it right you created man in your image?
Does that mean dogs look like you too?
Dear Dog,
That's true, in a sense, I gave dogs my demeanor.
Canines reflect what good men should be.
They're special to me, their name makes it clearer,
Just spell Dog backwards and you'll see what I mean.
Dear God,
I understand dogs age faster then masters,
In dog years, one equals man's seven,
When humans die it's You that they ask for.
Is it true what they say, that all dogs go to heaven?
Dear Dog,
Yes my friend, that is true.

Today's Just Not The Same
Our 10 year old Labradoodle, Daphne, died suddenly and unexpectedly, this morning. She lived a wonderful life. This is dedicated to her...
I lost a childhood friend today,
One I loved so much.
She was always there for me,
Wanting to be touched.
A loyal friend,
To the end,
I'll miss her very much.
I lost a bit of shadow today,
It's no where to be found.
My world seems somewhat emptier,
With it not around.
There's a pair,
Of empty chairs,
With no familiar sound.
I lost a true companion today,
A loyal, devoted fan.
One I always counted on,
To nudge my idle hand.
No cold, wet nose,
Or cuddles close,
Every now and then.
I lost a piece of me today,
A piece I can't regain.
I pray that she's at peace today,
In her new domain.
It's hard to say,
She's gone away,
Today's just not the same
Sleep well Daph. We'll miss you very much...

The Frisbee Catching Dog
I wrote this in September 1979 for my loving and faithful dog Nugget, the best dog in the world. He was my best friend for 12 years...
He certainly is a lazy ole fella,
This friend of mine.
Some say, "He's just a dumb animal"
I don't really mind.
Besides, I know him better than anyone.
Sure he's lazy,
Aren't all his kind?
He's a dog, part husky,
Their coats aren't fine.
And I know him better than anyone...
Don't let his laziness fool you though.
He's merely waiting for the time,
When I take him out,
Turn him loose,
And let that saucer fly.
For he's the Frisbee Catching Dog,
A legend in his time,
An honest-to-God celebrity,
With the ability to climb...
...high above friends and foes,
'till soaring disc he finds,
Then gradually to earth he floats,
then turning on a dime...
...back to me he brings the disc,
At my feet, he lets it lie.
Then sits and shines, as if to say,
"Come on, just one more time?"
So I grab the plate,
Cock my arm,
At once he's off he's off his behind.
There it goes,
The wind's got it now,
But where's that mutt of mine?
Oh well, like I said,
This ole fella's past his prime,
He's the laziest frisbee catching dog,
The world will ever find.
And of course, I know him better than anyone...

Itty-Bitty Persian Kitty
Itty-bitty Persian kitty,
You're so small, soft and pretty.
You sit and watch all you can.
Fit right in the palm of my hand,
Little Persian kitty cat,
Where the heck are you at?
You're always playing hide 'n seek,
Getting sillier week to week.
You're the cutest little kitten,
Feel just like a fuzzy mitten.
A fluffy, fuzzy ball of fur,
Always causing such a stir.
I love to watch you chase your ball,
When I roll it down the hall.
You use your paws to claw at things,
Fingers, toys and dangling strings.
You have a funny little mug,
It's scrunchy like a feline pug.
You barely weigh an ounce or two,
Pounce on everything that moves.
I'm not sure how big you'll get.
You'll never be the biggest pet.
I just pray you'll always stay,
Cute and cuddly and like to play.
My itty-bitty feline friend,
I'll love you dearly, thick or thin.
And when you've grown old and fat,
You'll still be my favorite cat.

No Greater Love
This poem is written to the wonderful accompanying painting by my friend Paul McGehee called "Faithful Companion". Be sure to check out all of Paul's art. He is a very talented local artist...
There's no love like a dog's,
When you're feeling blue.
It wags its tail, licks your hand,
Then cuddles close to you.
It never has a motive,
Mopes or just complains.
Its love is unconditional,
Loyalty remains.
A dog's love is pure love,
Precious, sure and true.
It can tell and understands,
When somethings bothering you.
They never have resentment,
Balk or show dismay.
Their sole source of contentment,
Is attention and want of play.
They never have an objection.
Never hold a grudge.
They vie for your affection.
With a bark or cold nose nudge.
They love you just the way you are,
Stay right by your side.
They treat you like a movie star,
Without a reason why.
And when their time has finally come,
They don't raise a peep.
They wag their tail, look at you,
Then quietly go to sleep.

Oodles of Doodles
I wake up every morning straddled by furry friends,
Three mollycoddled canines,
Braced firmly in my bed.
It's hard to roll left, even harder to roll right,
The covers are bottled around me,
I'm like a bagworm swaddled tight.
My bed is King Sized, pyramidal in width and height,
How did they saddle up here?
These ninjas of the night.
I tug at every corner trying to loosen up their grip,
But dare they budge a little,
I'm afraid the sheet might rip.
I finally break their hold and squirm out tentatively,
They sure do like to cuddle,
These spoiled bowwows fast asleep.
It's hard to get angry with this caboodled clan,
They're the cutest little threesome,
Puppy, Mom and Dad.
Daphne is the mother, her majesty, the Royal Queen.
She's the elder Labradoodle,
Nose nudgingly pristine.
Niles the distinguished father comes from a finer brood,
A Poodle that yields to others,
Waiting patiently for his food.
Max, now he's a handful, their offspring's still sewing seeds,
He acts just like a puppy,
Though he's the largest of the three.
Coats as black as coal, Niles has a fringe of grey,
Max is all jet black, with just a smidge of clay,
Daphne likes to be coddled, her highness gets her way.
Muddled pains in the canoodle, we love our Three Little Bears,
Momma, Poppa and Baby, bundled puddles of loving care,
Oodles of Doodles beyond compare.

Pavlov's Command
Postured attention,
Eyes Synchronized.
Unbroken concentration,
Focus intensified.
Unspoken communication,
Invoked and hypnotised.
Heads turn in unison,
Full attention held,
Cerebral infusion,
A mental mind meld.
Rules unnecessary,
Schooled on demand,
Drooling excessively,
Lost in 'La La' Land.
A primal fixation,
On every movement of hand,
The caninal persuasion,
Of Pavlov's command.
